Reading can be fun!

When is "too soon" to begin emphasizing literacy for your kids? How do you do this in away that is age-appropriate and fun? Some children just seem to be naturally inclined toward reading and stories, while others may need an extra bit of encouragement. I believe a love of reading and learning has to start early, and can come in many forms. Those of you with children, how did and do you encourage and excitement for books and learning? Any thoughts? I'd love to hear you ideas and great finds!

  2. I do not think one can start "too early." We have read to our kids since they were babies and have continued since. Both really enjoy being read to, and Zachary shows a natural gift for reading already. At age 4, he is reading at approx. a 3rd grade level. I think it's also a good idea to let children see that you also enjoy and value reading for pleasure. As far as what is age-appropriate, picture board books are great for infants and toddlers. For that age group, I especially like the books that incorporate different textures such as the "Touch and Feel" series. Zachary and Ashley seemed to get a kick out of those. For older toddlers and preschoolers, the Look and Find series can be fun. It turns storytime into more than just book-reading but also a game that seems to emphasize attention to detail which I think is a beneficial skill for anyone to acquire. We do not limit our reading to board books, however. The 3-minute storybooks (we have Sesame Street and Disney) also appeal to young children with limited attention spans. Find books on subjects that kids love and they will love reading them.
